on a C64 (or a 128 in 64 mode) equipped with two disk drives, a Ram Expansion Unit, and a reset switch. (If you are using a C128 and GEOS 128 2.0, you should use Rescue 128 instead of Rescue 64.) It requires that the two disk drives be hardware set as different Device Numbers, such as Devices 8 and 9, or 8 and 10. If additional drives (not accessed by GEOS) are set as Device 21 or Device 22, these drives must be turned off for this program to work properly. If you have not had a reset switch installed on your C-64, see issue #21 of GeoWorld for an article by Jean F. Major that decribes how to install it.
@PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
After a GEOS system crash, GEOS and the REU files can often be recovered by using a reset switch and the RBOOT program. Sometimes, however, because of the way GEOS sets up device numbers, GEOS will not reboot, or, if it does, one of the drives is no longer accessible.
Rescue 64 will examine your disk drives, look at how the drives were configured when you crashed, and reset the drives so that you can get back to GEOS and all the disk drives.
@USING RESCUE 64
@1. From C-64 BASIC
After hitting the reset button, load and run Rescue 64
instead
of RBOOT. Normally, this will take you right to the desktop, with all drives available in the same configuration as when you crashed. If, after running Rescue 64, you get a "READY" prompt instead of reaching the desktop, you should now load the RBOOT program. (This will only be necessary if you have run a C-64 program that has overwritten part of GEOS.)
@2. FROM THE DESKTOP
If you reboot GEOS using RBOOT
instead
of Rescue 64, you can still recover any drives that might have been lost. Just double click the Rescue 64 icon from the desktop. Rescue 64 will exit GEOS, reset the drives properly, and return to the desktop. You will find this much faster and simpler than resetting everything with the CONFIGURE file.
